Border
town located at the northwest side of Sonora
and 384 miles from Hermosillo, the capital of the state.
At the
beginning of the
1900 decade, Captain Carlos Calles settles a campament in the south side of the Colorado
River and canalized the water for irrigating the big and fertile valley. Being so near
with the american border it was a great attraction and many people came to live here. In
1923 a Customs office was installed and in 1939 was declared as Municipio.
San Luis Rio Colorado
is Mexico's most beautiful undiscovered place. At the Rio Colorado's delta, the Gulf
of Cortes beguins and a virgin, unspoiled and natural region waits for the visitor
who seeks for new experiences.
During the first months of
the year whales coming from cold waters come to the Sea of Cortez
to mate and have their cachalotes. The coast line
of San Luis Río Colorado offers this unique opportunity to whale watchers
and photographers.
Altar desert and El Pinacate, declared
Biosphere's reserve, with a landscape similar to moon, with huge craters of more
than 1.5 miles of diameter and a depth of 400 ft are places that you must visit. The zone,
protected since 1933 by the government, preserves an unique ecosystem: one hundred
different kinds of birds, resident or just migrating, gather here each year.
Every year in
May, a
big Fiesta Mexicana takes places in the city to say good by to the Snow Birds,
tourists that come from nordic latitudes seeking for a better and comfortable weather.
During March and April the Eastern festivities take place and in may the San
Luis 250 Off Road is held. The anniversary of the city is on June 14 and in
October and
November the traditional Expo Feria del Algodón attracts many people. During
November many activities are offered to the Snow Birds, as a welcome.
